BASF contributes to ultra-low energy Hamburg House at Shanghai EXPO 2010
Shanghai, CHINA - January 21, 2010 – 100 days ahead the opening of the Shanghai Expo 2010, BASF has taken steps to help make a pavilion of the Expo with no active heating and cooling system a reality.
The Germany Hamburg UBPA (the Urban Best Practices Area) Section of EXPO 2010 and BASF have signed a cooperation agreement on the Hamburg House, a project described as “a sustainable building of the highest ecological standard” by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg Germany. BASF will provide innovative thermal insulation solution and eco-friendly interior paint with no detectable VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) to support the Hamburg House, setting an example for sustainable construction in China.

“BASF has successfully met a wide variety of requirements from
consumers for energy efficiency and a comfortable living environment
in many different countries. We are very proud to contribute to the
Hamburg House and the Shanghai Expo 2010,” said Dr. Zheng Daqing,
Senior Vice President, BASF Group and Member of BASF Greater
China Country Board, “Through this construction demo, we hope to
show how advanced concepts and technologies can be applied in
China to realize a better quality of life and promote a culture of
sustainable building.”

“As the sister city of Shanghai and the largest German port city, Hamburg is dedicated to the preparation of the Hamburg House as a special gift for Expo 2010 in Shanghai,” said Mr. Lars Anke, Director of Hamburg Liaison Office Shanghai and Commissioner-General of Germany Hamburg UBPA Section of Expo 2010. “The first certified new building project for a passive house in China, the Hamburg House will provide a comprehensive reference for improving
building energy efficiency technology in China. I’m delighted to see BASF share the same vision with us. Its advanced insulation and coatings technologies will help us better achieve the goal.”

BASF Neopor® thermal insulation solution helps the Hamburg House to achieve the energy efficiency goal of a passive house by optimizing the building envelope. Insulating panels made of Neopor®, a BASF innovation, provide an insulating effect up to 20 percent higher than conventional EPS (expandable polystyrene) panels and are thus more eco-efficient. Insulation products made of Neopor® are already a common feature in wall and roof insulation applications in many passive houses around the world.

Apart from building energy efficiency, the design of Hamburg House also emphasizes the concept of comfortable living and eco-friendliness, and interior paints also play a vital role in developing a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. With no detectable VOC according to a testing report from National Authorized Testing Institute, BASF’s NORBINTM R1 interior paint meets high requirements for ecofriendliness by ensuring safety for painters during the construction period, as well as for users and visitors to the buildings - an important element of the design concept of Hamburg House.
